I’m excited and humbled to announce that our Mongolia project has been shortlisted for this year’s World Government Summit GovTech prize in the Educational Services category.

This nomination is a big honor for us, and a strong recognition of both Eduten's value as a tool for digital transformation of education systems, and our efforts to bring research-based learning tools from Finland to any country.

Background

Mongolia has been struggling with the quality, effectiveness, and results of its education system. For example, its results in the international assessment of PISA study are low, and the country needs to improve students’ skills in many subjects. This requires the country to develop new educational policies and apply effective tools and methods.

To this end, the Mongolian authorities have been evaluating many internationally available educational solutions. One such evaluation project was a research pilot to test the effectiveness and suitability of the UNESCO- and UNICEF-awarded Eduten platform in the Mongolian context. The research pilot was carried out in early 2023 by the Mongolian National Institute of Education Research (MNIER) in collaboration with Eduten and the University of Turku, Finland.

The project included a pre- and post-test scheme with a control group, and the research result indicated that the Eduten platform was able to significantly impact the students' learning results across many different kinds of schools. Moreover, the participating teachers and principals indicated that Eduten is fully suitable and valuable for Mongolian schools.

National rollout project

After the diligent research pilot project, Mongolian Ministry of Education and Science (MoES) decided to implement a Finnish mathematics learning platform called Eduten in all public schools in the country. During the last quarter of 2023 the MoES and Eduten rolled out the Eduten platform to all grade 3 and 4 primary schools for more than 139,000 students.

So far the results have been phenomenal: teachers report a dramatic increase in student mathematics learning results and activity levels, nationwide. Based on the results of the first phase, we are now working with MoES to roll out the Eduten platform for more grades during the following school years. More than 696,000 students in grades 1-9 will be receiving the benefits of Eduten in 2025.

Key results and data

The main result of the research pilot was a measured 22.1% improvement in 12 weeks in the mathematics skills of the participating students compared to the control group. MNIER highlighted the significance of this result as the pilot period was only 12 weeks, and it included schools all over the country, including rural areas.

Other important key results and findings:

In the following national rollout in September we trained more than 5200 teachers in using Eduten with their students. Subsequently, more than 134,000 students in more than 650 schools have been improving their mathematical understanding and skills with Eduten. In total, they have submitted more than 230 million answers since September 2023. Even though we are just getting started, the teachers all over the country are already reporting learning improvement of their students.
